Soothe Your Mind and Body with Cannabis-infused Teas
Similar to edibles Cannabis tea can be an enjoyable way, maybe even new, way for you to consume cannabis with vaping or smoking. There are a variety of methods for using the numerous ingredients based on your own personal preference. We have complied some information and a few recipes for you here.
Some simple methods to make weed tea:
- Infusing hot water or herbal tea with dried cannabis flower (THC is not water-soluble, thereby reducing intoxication)
- Blending cannabis with a fat such as coconut oil or butter and tea leaves to create a tea-latte style drink
- Adding a cannabis mixture to herbal tea.
Will weed get you high?
Creating a cannabis-infused tea that will provide similar medicinal benefits and the feeling of getting high is not a simple process. In order to get the same intoxicating effects as an edible, smoking, or vaping you must understand the process of decarboxylation.
Decarboxylation is the process of converting THCA (non-intoxicating compound) into THC (intoxicating compound). When you vape or smoke marijuana the decarboxylation is naturally started by the heat applied to the marijuana. When you make edibles, the decarboxylation process occurs naturally when the cannabis is heated and mixed with a fat.
What is important to understand then is that decarboxylate is started during a heating method. Therefore, in order to retain the best properties of your cannabis it is recommended to use a heating method before adding it to your tea.
Decarboxylation does depend on a few factors, so here they are
- What your heat sources is (electric or gas)
- How much cannabis you use
- How moist your cannabis is.
How long before weed tea will kick in?
Just like an edible, cannabis-infused tea will have to pass through your digestive tract, specifically your stomach and liver which will break down and metabolize the compounds. This is a longer process than smoking or vaping marijuana, which processes into your body much quicker due to passing through your lungs.
It could take up to two hours for you to start to feel the effects of the tea. Remember, just like when consuming edibles it is important to recall “low and slow”. Drink one cup of weed-tea and then wait if you are not getting the feeling within an hour or two make another cup.
Cannabis-infused tea recipes
As fall approaches in most part of the country and the cool crisp mornings start to take over a cup of warm tea is a great way to start the day. Of course, that is why you are here, and we have located two great cannabis-infused tea recipes for you. Cannabis-infused tea with chamomile and rose is a very adaptable recipe that can be used in numerous ways. The cannabis-infused coconut oil and golden milk is the perfect feel better tea, rich with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties.
Chamomile, Rose, and Cannabis Tea
Steep time: about 7 Minutes
Prep time: 5 Minutes
Dosage: 2 tsp is recommended for the Chamomile, Rose, and Cannabis tea. However, this will vary depending on the potency of your marijuana. After making this tea once or twice feel free to adjust the dosage.
- 2 tsp of dry rose buds
- 2 tsp of dry chamomile
- 2 tsp of ground cannabis (stems, trim, or buds will work)
- Cannabis-infused honey (optional)
- Coconut milk (optional)
- It is recommended to decarboxlate your dried cannabis first; however, it is not necessary.
- Combine all dried herbs and flowers into a tea infuser and steep in how water for about 7 minutes (longer for stronger tea, shorter for weaker tea)
- If you choose, add cannabis honey, or coconut milk, or both.
Medicated coconut oil and golden milk Cannabis-infused tea
Cook time: 20 Minutes
Prep time: 5 Minutes
Dosage: 2 tsp is recommended for the Medicated coconut oil and golden milk Cannabis-infused tea. However, this may vary depending on the strength of your cannabis coconut oil. Try a cup as directed and adjust thereafter.
- 1 cup of unsweetened almost (or other nut based) milk
- 1 whole cinnamon stick
- 1 1” thinly sliced, unpeeled, fresh turmeric. You can substitute with a ½ tsp of dried turmeric.
- 1 ½” slice of ginger, unpeeled.
- ¼ tsp whole black peppercorn
- 1 tablespoon of coconut oil (your choice of cannabis-infused)
- 1 tablespoon of honey (your choice of cannabis-infused)
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon, or 1 cinnamon stick.
- Over low heat mix almond milk, turmeric, ginger, honey, cinnamon, peppercorns, and 1 cup of water in a saucepan, bring to a boil.
- After reducing heat add coconut oil
- Simmer over low heat until flavors are homogenous.
- Strain through a sieve (fine-mesh) into mugs and sprinkle with cinnamon.
